Special Info |
Theresa Joseph was born on the beautiful island of Petit Martinique, Grenada, West Indies on June 30, 1937. She was the sixth child of Adela Decoteau, nee Joseph, and Joseph Decoteau. As a little girl, she attended St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic School, in Petit Martinique.
In Petit Martinique, she met and married her childhood sweetheart, Cleophus Joseph better known as “Throway”, and from that union came three children, Benjamin, Roy and Susan. She also had one adopted son, Michael, affectionately called Mikey.
Theresa, fondly known as Auntie Ada, immigrated to the United Kingdom in 1957 and remained there with her husband until 1971 when they migrated to the United States to live with her mother in law, Millicent Modeste, who was the matriarch of the family.
In England, she worked in the nursing profession and continued in that field while in the United States, first working with the Visiting Nurses Services. Following the Visiting Nurses Services, she joined the staff at Flushing Manor Care Center in Flushing, Queens, where she stayed for twenty-five years until her retirement in 2004.
Theresa was a devoted wife, daughter-in-law and mother. She loved her family and her children were her pride and joy. Most significantly, was her love for God and her Church. She accepted Christ into her life during the charismatic movement in the Catholic Church in the mid 1970s and from there she continued her spiritual growth.
She was a founding member of the Kingdom Life Ministries International, under the pastorship of Dr. Peter Bonadie and served him as an armor bearer. Theresa was also on the culinary committee that is responsible for everything that had to do with food and the kitchen, as well as the visitation team, which was responsible for visiting the sick and shut-ins. She was a member of the group “Seniors on the Move”.
Theresa had a wonderful personality. She had a big heart and gave generously of her time and resources to her church, her family and her community. She was an active member of the East 46th Street Block Association and worked tirelessly to ensure a better community for herself and her neighbors. She loved to travel and had a group of wonderful friends who were her travel companions.
She leaves to mourn: her children, Benjamin, Roy, Susan and Michael; her beloved sister Agatha of Petit Martinique, and brother Harris of Trinidad; her grandchildren: Shareen, Terrell, T’keyah, Antoine, Pascal, Uniq, Roy Jr., Roshon, Tabitha, Michelle and Melvin; great grandchildren: Tiah, Jada, Layla, Maliah and her faithful and devoted friend Sarah Tannis; her daughter-in-law, Kim Joseph; niece Margaret George; cousin Catherine Johnson, sisters-in-law Alcina David of Petit Martinique and Victoria Clouden of Brooklyn, New York, The Kent family from Canada and many relatives and friends too numerous to mention
